It’s that time of year again, lobster season is here! For many, it’s a cherished Keys tradition, but it’s also an important reminder of just how fragile our island ecosystem really is. Here's what you need to know:
Season Dates:
- Mini Season: The last Wednesday and Thursday of July (2025: July 30–31)
- Regular Season: August 6 – March 31
Rules & Limits:
- 6 lobsters per person per day in Monroe County
- Minimum carapace length: Must be larger than 3 inches, measured in the water
- No egg-bearing females
- A recreational saltwater fishing license and a lobster permit are required to harvest spiny lobster
Boater & Diver Safety Tips:
- Fly the dive flag! (Divers-down flag must be prominently displayed)
- Stay at least 300 feet away from dive flags in open water, 100 feet in narrow channels
- Avoid crowding dive spots — give others space and be respectful
- Watch your props, and anchor responsibly to protect coral reefs and seagrass beds
Quick Tips for a Safe & Successful Trip:
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate — July and August are brutally hot in the Keys
- Double-check your gear before you head out (license, dive flag, lobster gauge, gloves, net, cooler, etc.)
- Know the local no-take zones and protected areas
- Respect limits — they’re in place to keep the Keys’ ecosystem thriving

The rules and regulations aren’t just suggestions — they’re what help keep the reefs healthy, the lobsters plentiful, and the Keys beautiful for years to come. Whether you're a seasoned local or visiting for the first time, be a good steward of the sea.
Have fun out there — and happy hunting! 🦞
